Muscle fibres slide over each other as they contract (think how a bicep bulges when you bend your arm, that’s because the fibres are now bunched up).
Over time or due to injury or repetition, the fibres can become stuck together. This stops the muscles from fully extending which causes tightness and lumps within the muscles. These are the ‘knots’ which we can feel.
The best treatment is sports massage or cupping as these actually work to undo the knots and realign the fibres back up so that as they heal , they heal at full length enabling proper functionality.
What’s the difference between sports massage and deep tissue massage?
Contrary to popular belief, it’s not the amount of pain it will cause! We always use the minimum amount of pressure we can to unlock the knots.
For sports massage it’s all about the knowledge of the muscular systems and knowing where the muscles start and finish as that’s where we work to.
