SPF, or Sun Protection Factor, is a measure of how effectively a sunscreen protects the skin from harmful UV rays. The higher the SPF, the more protection a sunscreen offers against sunburn, skin damage, and skin cancer. Sunscreens with an SPF of 30 or higher are recommended for daily use to protect against skin damage caused by UV radiation.
SPF measures the amount of UVB radiation that is blocked by a sunscreen. UVB radiation is responsible for sunburn and is also a major cause of skin cancer. A sunscreen with an SPF of 30 blocks about 97% of UVB radiation. It is important to note that no sunscreen can block 100% of UV radiation, so it is still important to take other sun safety measures, such as seeking shade and wearing protective clothing.
It is essential to apply sunscreen every day (even in winter) and correctly to achieve the intended level of protection. Finally, it is important to choose a sunscreen that is “broad-spectrum,” which means it protects against both UVA and UVB radiation. The best also protect against ‘blue light’ which is given off by laptops, phones, computers and even LED lights.
